Midland and the surrounding suburbs sit right where the Perth plains start climbing into the foothills, and that transition zone creates some tricky antenna situations. Swan View and Greenmount are the obvious ones — you're in the hills, trees everywhere, terrain blocking signal paths. But even in Midland proper, the older housing stock has its own set of challenges.

I pulled an antenna off a place in Swan View last week that was genuinely vintage — a 1990s-era Kingray that had been up there for over twenty-five years. Amazingly, the antenna itself was still okay, but every single connection had corroded, the coax was cracked, and the balun had completely disintegrated. The homeowner was amazed he'd been getting any reception at all. New cabling, new connections, same antenna repositioned — works perfectly now.

Heritage Installs in Guildford

Guildford's got heritage homes that need a careful touch. You can't just drill into a hundred-year-old wall or slap a mast onto a Federation-era roof without thinking about it. I've done a few jobs in the Guildford historic precinct where the antenna needed to be mounted at the back of the property and cabled around to avoid any visible impact from the street.

Wet Weather Signal Drops

Koongamia and parts of Midvale have a lot of housing commission properties and older rentals. These homes often have the most neglected antennas because they've changed tenants multiple times and nobody thinks to maintain the antenna. I try to keep costs down for these jobs — sometimes a retune and new connections is all that's needed rather than a full replacement.

If you're in the Midland foothills and your reception drops out in wet weather, check your antenna connections first. Water getting into corroded joins is the most common cause of weather-dependent signal loss. A bit of self-amalgamating tape on the connections keeps moisture out and costs about five bucks from Bunnings.
